How to cut and paste files on a Mac
Updated
Finder does not cut files with ⌘X. Instead, copy the files with ⌘C, open the folder you want them in, and press ⌥⌘V to move them there. Apple's Mac keyboard shortcuts page (support.apple.com/en-us/102650) describes ⌥⌘V as moving "the files in the Clipboard from their original location to the current location."
To do the same from a menu, copy the files, open the destination folder, open the Edit menu and hold Option. "Paste Item" changes to "Move Item Here".
If you want ⌘X and ⌘V the way Windows does it, Haemil Explorer has them. Cut and paste is free there, and ⌘Z undoes the move. Cut works inside Haemil windows only.
Three ways to move files in Finder
| Method | How | Result |
|---|---|---|
| ⌘C then ⌥⌘V | Select the files and press ⌘C, open the destination and press ⌥⌘V | Moves |
| Edit menu | After ⌘C, open the Edit menu in the destination, hold Option and choose "Move Item Here" | Moves (same as ⌥⌘V) |
| Drag and drop | Drag the files onto the destination folder | Moves on the same disk, copies to another disk |
Why Finder has no Cut for files
Apple's support pages do not give a reason.
In Finder you decide between copy and move when you paste. ⌘C and then ⌘V copies. ⌘C and then ⌥⌘V moves. If your hands know Windows, remember it as ⌥⌘V in place of ⌘X.
When dragging moves and when it copies
Dragging to another folder on the same disk moves the files. Dragging to a different disk, such as an external drive or a USB stick, copies them and leaves the originals.
Hold Option while you drag to copy instead of move, as Apple's drag-and-drop help page says. To move files to another disk instead of copying them, hold Command while you drag.
Dragging in Haemil Explorer follows the same rules. It moves on the same disk, copies to another disk, and always copies when you hold Option.
Cut and paste with ⌘X and ⌘V in Haemil Explorer
- Select the files and press ⌘X. "Cut" in the right-click menu does the same.
- Go to the destination folder. You can press ⌘L and type its path into the address bar.
- Press ⌘V. If a file with the same name exists, Haemil asks what to do first. Progress shows in the status bar.
- If you moved the wrong thing, press ⌘Z.
⌘X only marks the files. They stay where they are until you press ⌘V. After one paste the clipboard is cleared, so a second ⌘V does not move anything again.
Haemil shares the clipboard with Finder. Files copied in Finder with ⌘C paste into Haemil with ⌘V, and the other way round. Cut works inside Haemil windows only.
Cut and paste are free.
Move between two folders side by side (dual pane)
Press ⌘\ to open two panes side by side in one tab. Select files and press ⇧⌥⌘M to move them to the folder in the other pane, or ⇧⌥⌘C to copy them. Dragging to the other pane works too.
Dual pane is a Pro feature, and you can try it free for the first 14 days.
Finder and Haemil side by side
| Task | Finder | Haemil Explorer |
|---|---|---|
| Cut and move | ⌘C then ⌥⌘V | ⌘X then ⌘V |
| Copy | ⌘C then ⌘V | ⌘C then ⌘V |
| Undo a move | ⌘Z | ⌘Z |
| Move between two folders side by side | Open two Finder windows and drag | Dual pane with ⌘\, then ⇧⌥⌘M (Pro) |
Moving files safely
In Haemil, ⌘Z undoes moves, renames, moves to the Trash and new items. It keeps the last 20 actions while the app is open.
Files deleted with ⌦ or ⌘⌫ go to the Trash. ⇧⌦ deletes permanently and asks first.
