Mac dual-pane file managers compared: 5 apps

Updated

If you move files to and from remote servers (FTP, SFTP, cloud), pick ForkLift 4. To start without paying, Commander One has a free tier. If you want a size chart and folder sync in one app and a subscription is fine, Path Finder fits. To split a window into multiple panes with 12 layouts, use QSpace.

If you want a Windows File Explorer layout with dual panes, plus a duplicate finder, a disk space map and ZIP files that keep non-English names readable on Windows, Haemil Explorer fits. Its dual pane is Pro, and you can try it free for the first 14 days. Haemil has no dedicated SFTP or cloud drive connections, so ForkLift is the better choice for remote-heavy work.

Prices and features were checked on each app's official site on October 23, 2026. Only the Path Finder prices follow a TidBITS article.

Three things to decide first

Remote connections. Do you work with FTP, SFTP or cloud storage open in one pane?

Layout. Do you prefer a commander-style layout like Total Commander, or something closer to Finder or Windows File Explorer?

Built-in tools. Do you want batch rename, folder compare and sync, disk space and duplicate finding in one app instead of buying each separately?

"Could not confirm" means we did not find it in official material, not that the feature is missing. Prices change, so check each site before you buy.

ForkLift 4

ForkLift describes itself as a dual-pane file manager and file transfer client for macOS. It handles FTP, SFTP and cloud storage in its panes, opens archives like folders, searches file contents, and does one-way and two-way sync. It also has batch rename (Multi-Rename). If you work with remote storage inside your file manager a lot, that is the big difference.

A license for one Mac is $19.95 with one year of updates, or $34.95 with two. There are also Family ($29.95) and Small Business (5 Macs, $69.95) licenses. When the update period ends you keep using your version, but a new major version has to be bought again. Korean is not in the 12 languages listed on the official site. The latest version is 4.7.7 (October 20, 2026).

Commander One

The basic app is free and PRO is a one-time purchase: $29.99 for one Mac, $99.99 for a team of five. Future upgrades are a separate product called "Lifetime Upgrades Guarantee". The Korean App Store lists the PRO Pack at ₩49,000.

It has a Korean interface, mounts cloud storage and FTP, and searches inside archives. The free tier handles ZIP archives only. The vendor says the App Store version lacks some features because of sandboxing, and its own comparison with Path Finder lists no folder compare or sync. The latest version is 3.18 (September 25, 2026).

Path Finder

It combines dual panes, the Size Browser chart, batch rename, and folder compare and sync. It has one of the longer feature lists here.

There is no lifetime license, only a subscription: $29.95 a year per TidBITS, with term licenses also sold (1 year $32.95, 2 years $55.95, 5 years $122.95). There is a 30-day trial. The official site cocoatech.io shows its purchase screen in a widget rather than as text, so the prices here follow the TidBITS article on Path Finder 26 (May 10, 2026). Setapp lists "19 languages" without naming them, so we could not confirm a Korean interface.

QSpace

It splits a window into multiple panes with 12 layouts to choose from. It has had a Korean interface since V4.3.2, folder sync with a hash compare option, and search by name, content or comment. New versions come out often.

It is a one-time purchase. On October 23, 2026 it was on sale: $12.99 on the App Store (list $27.99) and $13.99 for Pro direct (list $29.99), and the sale price may change soon. Features such as batch rename are extensions sold separately (each $0–$0.99 on sale, $4.99–$9.99 list, and Enhanced Archiver is free). One account covers two Macs. The Korean App Store price is ₩22,000.

Haemil Explorer: what it does well and what it lacks

Haemil is a Mac file explorer that works like Windows File Explorer. Tabs, an always-visible address bar, Windows' eight views plus columns, and name and content search are free. Dual pane (⌘\) is Pro. Each pane keeps its own folder, view, sort and search, Tab switches panes, and ⇧⌥⌘C or ⇧⌥⌘M copies or moves to the other pane.

Pro also includes a disk space treemap, a duplicate finder (SHA-256), batch rename, folder compare and sync (one ⌘Z undoes a whole sync) and browsing ZIP files, so you do not need separate apps for those. When it makes a ZIP it writes names as NFC UTF-8, and it reads CP949 names in ZIPs made on Korean Windows. Both of those are free.

It has gaps too. Its only remote connection is Connect to Server (⌘K), where macOS mounts a network share as it does for Finder. You can also mount an ftp:// address with Connect to Server (⌘K), but there are no FTP or SFTP transfer app features and no dedicated cloud drive connections. It splits into two panes at most. It runs only on Apple Silicon with macOS 14 or later.

Other options

Nimble Commander is a free, open-source (GPL-3.0) commander-style dual-pane app. Its App Store listing names Russian and English as its languages.

Marta is free while in beta. A paid license is planned for the full release, with no price announced. Its blog has had no new post since 0.8.2 in August 2024.

Folders is a single-window app with a Windows-style folder tree on the left. It has a Korean interface and costs $11.99 once after a 14-day trial. Its developer says it leaves out dual panes on purpose.

Who each one suits

If you move files to servers or cloud storage a lot, pick ForkLift 4. It has no Korean interface.

To try before paying, start with Commander One's free tier, or with the trials of Path Finder (30 days) or Haemil Explorer (14 days of Pro).

If a commander-style layout like Total Commander is what your hands know, Commander One or Nimble Commander may feel natural.

If you want a size chart, batch rename and sync in one app and a subscription is fine, Path Finder fits.

If you want to split a window into multiple panes with 12 layouts, or to buy only the features you need, QSpace fits.

If you want a Windows File Explorer layout, ZIP files that keep non-English names readable, and duplicate and disk space cleanup in one app, Haemil Explorer fits.

If you only need a Windows-style folder tree and no dual pane, Folders is worth a look.
